GWM has revealed a plug-in hybrid version of its Cannon ute, broadening its electrified commercial vehicle range ahead of an Australian launch later this year. The Cannon Hi4-T PHEV joins the larger Cannon Alpha Hi4-T as the second plug-in hybrid ute in GWM’s local line-up. This move makes the Chinese brand the only manufacturer currently offering two PHEV utes in Australia.
While local pricing and final specifications are yet to be confirmed, GWM says the new model has been developed to bridge the gap between traditional diesel-powered work utes and fully electric vehicles. It does this by combining battery-electric driving with conventional four-wheel-drive capability. The strategy aims to attract buyers who want fuel savings but are not ready to abandon the utility of a combustion engine.
Powertrain and Performance
Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 310kW and 750Nm. These figures place the vehicle at the competitive end of the segment for performance. The plug-in hybrid system is matched to GWM’s Hi4-T drivetrain, which retains a conventional transmission and mechanical four-wheel-drive system rather than relying solely on electric motors to drive just one axle.
This engineering choice is significant. Many hybrid trucks rely on electric motors for the rear or front axle exclusively, which can limit performance in extreme off-road conditions. By keeping the mechanical transfer case and transmission, GWM intends to maintain the durability expected of a work vehicle.

For many buyers, the reality of ownership involves a mix of highway driving and urban work. This hybrid approach allows the vehicle to function as a standard EV for the school run or office commute, yet it retains the heavy-duty capability required to tow a boat or trailer on weekends without the range anxiety that often plagues pure electric trucks in this segment.
Range and Efficiency
GWM claims combined fuel consumption of 2.4L/100km based on the NEDC testing standard. A 33.1kWh battery provides a claimed 115km of electric-only driving range (NEDC), allowing many owners to complete daily commuting without using the petrol engine. When both power sources are combined, the company claims a total driving range of 1037km (NEDC).
The ability to travel over 1000km on a single tank of fuel combined with battery charge reduces the need for frequent fuel stops during long regional trips. This range capability addresses one of the primary concerns for commercial users who cannot afford significant downtime.
Utility and Features
Unlike many electrified passenger vehicles, the Cannon Hi4-T has been engineered to retain its towing and off-road credentials. It offers a 3500kg braked towing capacity, which matches the industry standard for heavy-duty work utes. The traditional four-wheel-drive system is intended to preserve off-road capability in challenging terrain.

The new model also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, including 230-volt power outlets integrated into the ute tub. The system allows the vehicle’s battery to power equipment such as tools, camping appliances or household devices when the vehicle is parked. This feature turns the truck into a mobile power station, which is useful for tradespeople who need power on remote sites or for recreational users at campsites.
Market Position
The Cannon Hi4-T expands what has become one of Australia’s broadest ute ranges. GWM now offers two Cannon model families across multiple body styles and four different powertrains, spanning petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. This variety allows the brand to capture a wide spectrum of customer needs.
GWM has not announced Australian pricing but says the Cannon Hi4-T will be positioned among the country’s more affordable plug-in hybrid utes when it arrives. Full specifications, pricing and local timing are expected closer to launch. GWM now offers two Cannon models, enhancing its position in the Australian market with a diverse range of options for customers.
